Program Overview
The M.A.T. major in English Education provides initial teacher preparation for individuals holding bachelor’s degrees in English. It leads to both a master's degree and certification for teaching secondary English language arts (grades 6-12).
The program’s underlying framework is constructivism, which suggests that human beings create knowledge through acting on their environment and interacting with other humans. The program is a cohort program that encourages and supports planning, teaching, and reflection with colleagues who are committed to excellence in urban English education. The program requires a minimum of 45- semester hours of graduate coursework.
Program Admissions
All applicants must meet the College of Education’s requirements for admission to graduate study. These requirements include the following:
• A minimum score of 800 on the general test of the GRE (verbal and quantitative subtests only)
• A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher
• Three letters of recommendations: one academic or professional, one from someone who can evaluate your personal qualifications, and one from a current supervisor
• A statement of career goals in 300-500 words

Additional admission requirements specific to this program include the following:
1. An undergraduate or graduate degree in English or the equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university. An equivalent degree (e.g. speech, drama, journalism) must include course work consisting of at least 24 semester hours of upper-division credit in English content, including a minimum of three semester hours in each of the following areas:
• American literature,2. A writing sample. The department may specify other requirements.

Program Degree Requirements and Academic Regulations
The M.A.T. program is a carefully sequenced program. Students must follow the prescribed program sequence or they may be withdrawn from the program and may need to reapply to enter the next program cycle. Each student is advised by a committee consisting of faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences and faculty from the College of Education.
