The Department of Middle-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology of the College of Education and the Department of Applied Linguistic and English as a Second Language of the College of Arts and Sciences offer graduate courses in bilingual/English as a second language to give teachers additional training to work with non-English-speaking or limited-English-speaking students at the early childhood, middle childhood, and secondary school levels.
Successful completion of the ESOL endorsement coursework and completion of a portfolio demonstrating competencies established for ESOL teachers by TESOL qualifies a person for the bachelor's, master's, or specialist level endorsement, depending upon the student's current level of certification. The program presupposes certification at least at the bachelor's level. Students seeking only the ESOL endorsement must be admitted to the Graduate program in the College of Education as a non-degree student. (See the program description for the M.Ed. with a major in Reading, Language, and Literacy Education for application of TSLE courses to a degree program. Students who do not hold an initial certification in a teaching field may apply to the Alternative M.Ed. program in Reading, Language, and Literacy Education to receive initial certification in ESOL and a reading endorsement.)
