Reading Ins. Model

The Reading Institute Model includes an intense summer study with subsequent classroom application and reflection in the year following the institute.  Teachers receive 9 hours of college credit. The institute consists of three parts:

The Summer Institute where teachers focus on understanding readers and the reading process, linking assessment and instruction and instructional strategies in the content areas. Emphasis is placed on planning ways to meet the needs of students in the teachers’ classrooms the following year.

The Reading Consortium Forum held at the Center for the USG Reading Consortium where teachers enrolled in Summer Institutes at universities throughout the state come together for a day of workshops, some of which are led by former participants in the reading endorsement program.

Follow-up Support for the Classroom is provided to help teachers integrate literacy-related instructional strategies and assessment techniques in their own classrooms with the support of the Summer Institute faculty and distance technology.  Teachers create portfolios documenting their abilities to meet the literacy needs of students in their classrooms.
