Instructional Narratives

You are required to complete an individual narrative describing in detail your ideas for teaching some specific content. Your narrative plan will count 20 points of your final grade. The narrative will be due on June 26.

These narratives should be 4-5 double-spaced pages in length and should focus on your understanding of the content as well as your ideas for how to teach this content. You are not writing step-by-step (mechanical) lesson plans. You will do this in other classes. Instead, I would like for you to focus on ideas. These ideas will be some of your first efforts at thinking about pedagogy consequently it makes since to write in a narrative format that will allow you to express your ideas. Your instructional ideas should reflect the subject matter content relating to the instructional ideas.

Each narrative should be formatted using the outline below.

Subject Matter Content Knowledge: It is crucial that you understand the subject matter covered in the lesson. Please include at least two paragraphs explaining the content subject matter. This overview should be written to reflect your understanding.

Objective(s): Describe what you will expect the students to learn in this instructional activity. These objectives of your instructional idea(s) will drive the development of the full idea. Please describe these objectives in behavioral/cognitive terms.

Procedures/Instructional strategies: Please provide a detailed description of the procedures that would need to be followed if you were to teach this content. Your written procedures should be the bulk of the narrative and should include a range of instructional strategies. These strategies may include but should not be limited to lecture, direct instruction, cooperative grouping, simulation, role playing, inquiry, discussion, use of literature, multicultural considerations, and global understanding.
Assessment strategies: Please provide a written description of how you will determine whether the learners' in the class understood what you proposed to teach them. In other words how will you determine students' progress toward the attainment of your objective(s)? These assessments may include objective or formal assessments like a quiz or a subjective informal assessment such as those based on participation. Authentic assessment techniques should be used.

I will assess your instructional narratives using the following criteria

  • Subject matter content knowledge (5 points)
  • Objectives (2 point)
  • Procedures/instructional strategies (5 points)
  • Assessment (3 points)

The instructional narrative is due June 26. You may submit electronically, in class, or in my office - College of Education room, 674.
