The Pirate's House is
a restaurant that has been in business since 1753. Once
a pub to seamen, this
Savannah River restaurant was said to have hosted such despicable pirates
as Captain Flint, Black Dog, and Billy Bones. The evil was rampant
among these horrible men, and many men were killed in the home. In
Robert Louis Stevenson's classic, Treasure Island, there are many
references to Savannah, and the scenes most likely occured at the Pirate's
House. Many people believe that Captain Flint died in the house,
and can sometimes be seen wandering through the house yelling, "Get me
the brandy. Get it I say!" (Roberts, 7)
In
addition to the untimely deaths that occured, many others were shanghaied.
In order to get slave labor for the ships, the pirates would get the young,
unsuspecting boys drunk on brandy, and then sneak them through a secret
tunnel to their awaiting ships. This tunnel ran under the house straight
to the Savannah River. Upon the ships, the boys were treated harshly
and were often tortured if they resisted.
With
such an evil history, it is no wonder that supernatural events have been
attributed to the house. Many people have claimed to hear Flint and
the other pirates yelling from the tunnel. One Savannah native had
a particularly disturbing experience. He had heard about this mysterious
tunnel for years, and after bribing one of the waiters, found it.
He lowered himself in, and started walking the distance to the river.
He wasn't scared at first because he could still hear the conversation
in the restaurant above. Soon, though, the lull was far behind him.
After walking quite a ways, he came to a heavy iron door. He was
able to dislodge the door after throwing his weight against it, and proceeded
on. At that point, he felt a sharp object against his foot.
Shining his pocket flashlight toward his foot, he discovered a skeleton!
He was scared at first, but was even more scared when he heard what sounded
like the heavy door shutting behind him. Would he be caught in the
same fate as the skeleton. Just then, he began to hear loud conversation
from what he described as the most evil voice he had ever heard.
He demised that it could have been none other than Captain Flint.
He leaned sharply against the wall, hoping the two pirates would not see
him. Just then, the shadowy figures passed by him and through the
next heavy door as though it did not exist. As they passed, an icy
chill to the air whipped through his body. He turned and ran back
to the restaurant as fast as he could, and until now has not revealed this
story to many people!
