    There are many tales from the Southern region of the United States of supernatural phenomena, particularly from Georgia. Stories of mysterious mists, ghostly faces in the window, and haunted voices from the grave are passed down through the generations from Grandparents to children to grandchildren, etc.  It is extremely beneficial for us to examine these stories for two reasons.  First, the stories behind the hauntings generally lead us to interesting historical facts about the region and our heritage.  Second, these tales and folk stories are a part of our history and it is important for us to study and continue to pass these on.  Do not be mislead, however, that these stories are light-hearted and fun!  This project is not for the faint at heart!

Below are three harrowing tales of Georgia Ghosts.  Read each and form your own opinion of the tale.  Here are some questions to consider:
1.  What historical facts is the story based upon?
2.  Why might these places be inhabited by ghosts?
3.  If you don't believe in ghosts, give an explanation of the phenomena.
4.  If you DO believe in ghosts, give an alternate explanation of the
     phenomena.

For the semester project, you will be responsible for researching one of the following historical sites.  Research may be done with book resources, internet, and stories from elders.  The final product will be a presentation board with pictures, brochures, poems, captions, stories, etc.  (See handout for rubric and requirements.)  You may work with a partner, or alone. Following are acceptable sites for research.  Others may be considered with teacher pre approval.
